Why Should You Become A Christian?

You may have asked yourself that question at some point in your life.  Perhaps you have a Christian friend or relative who has tried to convince you or you've seen a pastor speak on TV.  It may be just something inside of you urging you to try to understand. Perhaps you are pondering the idea of becoming a Christian right now and just haven't come to terms with the reasons "why?"  What's in it for me?  What does it really mean anyway?  Does God really love everyone?   All of us have asked ourselves these questions at some point in our lives.  Some of us grew up in Christian homes with Christian parents and were able to ask questions about God for our whole lives.  We went to Sunday School, studied with our parents, and, hopefully, saw a Godly lifestyle modeled for us through the lives of many people in our churches.  Even those of us who grew up in this environment eventually had to make the decision for ourselves.  Others of us may have grown up with absolutely no mention of religion whatsoever and are just now starting to question the existence of God.  There are many people who still, in spite of the evidence, do not even believe that God exists.  We are all at different places in our search for a relationship with God.  Many long-time Christians challenge their relationship with Jesus Christ to try to reprove it and build a better and stronger bond.  Some may have even been tainted by bad experiences with so-called Christians who didn't always measure up to some "standard".  The truth is: Christians are not perfect.  We are just being "made" perfect through the saving grace of Jesus Christ.  The process continues for our entire lives.  Therefore, we should never base our entire view of God on what we've seen others do.  In other words, you shouldn't blame God for things "people" do.

What About The Scientific Evidence?

There is compelling scientific evidence supporting the existence of a Creator.  Nature screams out to us with many examples of a Creator's hand in the forming of the universe.  Very reputable scientists have agreed that there is logical reason to believe in a Creator.  A Creator fits into the equation of lots of our most popular theories.  Some things simply can not be explained by evolution.  That being said, scientific evidence is not the best reason to become a Christian.  God reveals Himself to us through science, but He proves Himself to us through His Word, the Bible.  In fact, there is nothing particularly scientific about becoming a Christian.  Becoming a Christian is more personal.  It involves establishing an individual relationship with God's only Son, Jesus.  There have been long theological debates about sin and how it all began, but in short, regardless of the details, we were separated from God and Jesus came to give us a way to bridge that separation.  Jesus' birth, life, and death, were part of God's plan.  God revealed Himself to us through the person of Jesus Christ so that He, God, could take the place for our sins.  He loves us regardless of what we have ever done and regardless of who we are or where we're from or where we've been or what we look like or anything.  Although God's love is unconditional, the relationship is different for everyone.  God meets people wherever they are and whenever they ask.  Volumes have been written trying to establish an easy answer to the question "Why Should You Become A Christian?", but the answer is different for each person seeking Him.  In other words, the answer to the question, in your life, can only be found by evaluating your particular circumstances.

So, What's It All About Then?

OK, "the answer is different for each person seeking Him" may sound like a cop-out answer, but we're not going to lie to you.  Central Christian Church is not in the business of selling prefab solutions.  We believe in the party line: God does love everyone, He does want you to give your life to Him through His Son Jesus Christ, and He does have a place for you in eternity.  All of that is true and you've heard all of that before.  We would absolutely love it if everyone simply believed based on those promises.  However, in reality, the decision takes on a different form for each individual.  We would be extremely excited to help you find a place for God in your life, but we don't have a magic formula for convincing you.  This has got to be your choice.  Choice is at the heart of Christianity.  We'd love to help you and we are here for you, but first we suggest that you try asking "Him".  Even if you don't believe in Him,  He still believes in you and He has promised to answer as soon as you ask.  Find some place quiet, so you won't be too distracted to really try, and just ask Him!  You may feel a little uncomfortable or even silly, but it will only be between you and God.  You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.  Adding Jesus Christ to your life is a big deal and, like any new experience, it takes a willingness to try some things even if you don't totally understand them all and even if you are not always comfortable in the attempt.  A smart guy once surmised that "Jesus came to trouble the comfortable as much as he came to comfort the troubled."  It makes sense that a real God would both challenge and comfort us.  We would never suggest that you take any of this lightly, but we do, emphatically, suggest that you actively seek out the special answer God has just for you.  Please feel free to ask us any questions comments@centralsj.org.  We believe that the rewards of peace and joy beyond explanation, and the sense of belonging like none you have known before are well worth whatever effort it takes.  Here are some things you can do if you want to continue:
